At McGuane there is a WWI memorial with my grandfather's brother's name, Paul Conners. My mother was born at home on 48th Union. We attended St Gabe's Church. I would get so angry when my Uncle would take his son and my Irish twin to the Boys' Club ("It isn't FAIR!" I would protest every time and question why I had to be a "stupid girl."
My childhood memories are Bridgeport and Canaryville. I moved to Wisconsin in 1996 when I was 18 and returned to Chicago in 2016. I just recently moved back to Canaryville, and another generation just started kindergarten at Graham Elementary School "New Building." I started working at the age of 14 (do not ask, 😂) in Bridgeport at the Brown's Chicken for all of my high school years. I expanded my horizons in the summer by also working at the Egg Store, both located on 30th Halsted. I loved the Bridgeport Restaurant and ordered original cherry cokes there (the coca Cola/Pepsi versions can't touch it.) I remember seeing my first scary movie, Stephan King's "Firestarter" at the Ramova Theater there. I was convinced I was really Drew Barrymore and could start fires when I got mad with out matches or a lighter , 😂. The Sugar Shack ice cream place is still there on 26th Wallace (be careful, last week I had to tell them my banana split was made without any bananas or splits, but once she replaced it, yummy!) And my school days were spent at Graham Elementary School, (I attended both buildings,) My three best friends and I loved building "houses" in the vacant lot on 47th place across from Tilden. My first "real" kiss (FROM A BOY!!! )was in the "cubbyhole" at Tilden. Hot Chicago summers were spent playing under the "pump" (fire hydrant) when we could talk the key holder into opening it up; In the winter, my Irish twin brother and I built ice "igloos" & "forts" in Tilden HS parking lot...and I remember being scared and excited at the same time when my older brother raced cars through the stockyards (sometimes I was his cheerleader, other times, his "backseat" driver!)In my teens I was a frequent "visitor" to the juvenile division at the 9th District police Department on 35th and Lowe (now on Halsted.) My frequent flyer status there stopped once I turned 17 (Hard pass on visiting County, just saying!)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7248062597580441201.post-38278811259656351242024-02-29T02:47:05.916-08:002024-02-29T02:47:05.916-08:00My family has lived in Bridgeport and Canaryville ...My family has lived in Bridgeport and Canaryville for multiple generations. There was the original store between 33rd and 34th on Halsted, but Citibank demolished the building and installed a parking lot. Beck's moved to the next block for a few years, I believe early 80's, a much smaller store. She worked for "Mr. Cohen" for 35 years. To those who read this, I'd love to see photos of either store. If I can help with history of Bridgeport, I'll offer whatever I can. I think it would be just fine for a little green area .... maybe some paths, bike racks, benches ... a fountain like is next to the Daley Library ... I don't know that it necessarily needs to be commercial. With the cops right next door they could and SHOULD keep it policed up so it doesn't become a spot for illegal activity and is of benefit to the neighborhood... just an idea ... but you're right ... it will be interesting to see what develops there ... its almost the geographical center of Bridgeport and its a great corner so I hope some thought goes into it and whatever happens its an asset to our community.
You know, the other day I was reminiscing about what 31st and Halsted looked like in 1960 ... then I thought about what it might look like in 2060.
Now I won't be here to see it ... thats almost a sure bet ... give or take 50 years.Paul Zickushttp://www.vetcounselor.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7248062597580441201.post-83606293425870264652010-10-25T22:04:43.211-07:002010-10-25T22:04:43.211-07:00I didn't know queue was the name for that trad...I didn't know queue was the name for that traditional Chinese hairstyle.
